How Massage Benefits Your Hormones

How Massage Benefits Your Hormones

During a massage, a lot is happening physiologically and psychologically to our body. Once we give ourselves the time to slow down and rest, we go into a relaxing state (brought to you by the parasympathetic nervous system!).

There are 3 main benefits to massage therapy on the endocrine system, a strong proponent to all of the hormones that are released within the human body.

1. Increases general circulation in endocrine system and thus helps in transport of hormones

The master hormone gland of the body, known as the hypothalamus, helps with maintaining the body's hormone levels when transported (also known as homeostasis). Other important hormone glands that control circulation and transportation of hormones are the pituitary gland and the adrenal gland. During massage, blood circulation increases and hormones from the hormone glands can be delivered faster to each of their destination.

2. Indirectly aids immune system, as some hormones produce lymphocytes to aid in immunization

3. Normalizes endocrine activity through balancing effect on ANS

The autonomic system (ANS) can help to lower epinephrine and norepinephrine (stress hormones) and regulate cortisol (steroid hormone). Massage can also increase dopamine and serotonin (also known as the happy “feel good” hormones). By balancing the ANS, it can help normalize the endocrine system while making the body feel good and happy!
